Letters by and relating to Beau Brummell, 1827-1844.

Autograph letters and verses signed by George Bryan Brummell and signed autograph letters of his contemporaries collected and mounted in two volumes by Brummell's biographer William Jesse. The first volume contains forty-nine autograph letters, three manuscript verses, and a memorandum by Brummell written between 1827 and 1836 after he had fled to France to avoid his creditors. Most of the letters were written to a Mrs. Harris of Caen while he was in a French debtors prison. The volume also contains three engraved portraits of Brummell and a printed description of the collection mounted by a later owner in the front of the volume. Volume two contains sixty-three letters dating from 1842 to 1844 to Jesse from individuals including William Wordsworth, Leigh Hunt, Samuel Rogers, and Thomas Moore who responded to his request for letters written to them by Brummell and personal insights into his character. Many of the letters are annotated with brief biographical sketches in an unidentified hand and are accompanied by engraved portraits of the correspondents. Also included are two letters written to Brummell in 1830 and 1831 while he was British consul at Caen, one unidentified letter fragment, and a duplicate of the printed collection description which appears in volume one. Each item in the two volumes is followed by a typed transcription.
